The Berlin Wall Memorial, located in the city centre, is the central location devoted to remembering the years of German division. The memorial extends for 1.4 km along the former border that ran along Bernauer Straße. The site contains the last piece of the Berlin Wall fully embedded into the ground and gives an impression of the "protections" along the border at the end of the 1980s.
Notice: the Documentation Centre at the Berlin Wall Memorial is currently closed for rebuilding. The watchtower located at the documentation centre, as the visitor's centre and the open-air exhibition on the site remain open.

The GDR Museum is dedicated to life in the former GDR, from everyday life in the Socialist state to the impact of living with the Stasi and the Wall. In 2010, the museum added the Domklause, an East German-style restaurant. Popular dishes from the former GDR are served, including "Grilletta" (a pork burger), "Broiler" (roast chicken), a Russian-style soup called "Soljanka" and "Jägerschnitzel" (a breaded sausage with peppers).

Haus 1
The Stasi Museum is located in Haus 1 of the main complex of the East German Ministry for State Security (known as the Stasi). The complex is in Berlin-Lichtenberg and was where Erich Mielke, the last Stasi boss, had his offices. His office and work rooms can be visited in their original condition. An exhibition on the Stasi's activities sheds light on different aspects of the East German political system as well as resistance and opposition to the regime.

Hohenschönhausen was used as the central detention centre for the Stasi from 1961–1989. Thousands of political opponents of the regime were detained in this place, including almost all well-known members of the East German opposition.

Mühlenstraße, Berlin-Friedrichshain
The East Side Gallery in Berlin-Friedrichshain is a mile-long stretch of the Berlin Wall that was painted in spring 1990 by 118 artists from 21 countries. The gallery runs along the River Spree from Berlin Ostbahnhof to the Oberbaumbrücke. The artists commented on the political changes of 1989-90 with a hundred or so paintings along what had been the East Berlin side of the Wall.
Marx-Engels Monument Berlin-Mitte
The Marx-Engels-Forum, a relic from GDR times, can be found on Spandauer Straße. The forum is home to a larger-than-life sculpture of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, the founding fathers of scientific socialism. The current monument was dedicated on 4 April 1986. Due to the reconstruction of U-Bahn-line U5 to the Brandenburg Gate, the monument was moved in 2010 to a green space near the Karl-Liebknecht-Brücke. In their new home, the two figures now face west instead of the east.
Karl-Marx-Allee Berlin-Friedrichshain, Berlin-Mitte
Karl-Marx-Allee is a one-of-a-kind outdoor museum of the architecture of socialist realism. Built from 1952–60 by the architect team of Hartmann, Henselmann, Hopp, Leucht, Paulick and Souradny, this street was the main parade route in the former East Germany.

DDR Motorcycle Museum

Covering about 1,000 m2 over two storeys, this museum holds more than 140 motorcycles, scooters and mopeds made by East German companies DKW, IFA, MZ, Simson-Suhl, IWL and EMW. These are nearly every model produced during forty years of production in the former East Germany. In addition, many two-person, sports and racing machines are on display as are special makes and official vehicles.

The museum is dedicated to the bone-rattling favourite car of East Germany. Fifteen Trabants are on display, including one with a camping tent on the roof, a tuned racing Trabi that once got up to 170 km/h, a Trabi once used by the police and an armoured Trabi. The state-owned car factory in Zwickau and VEB Sachsenring built more than three million Trabants from 1958–1991. The sales price was originally 7,500 East German marks, but the price climbed over the years as did the waiting time to an average of twelve years.

The so-called Panoramic Observation Tower was used at this location by East German border patrols and the Stasi before the fall of the Wall. The tower was used to conduct surveillance of the border strip and the area around the East German House of Ministries. The massive, crenelated type BT6 watchtower was built in 1966. By the end of the GDR era, more than 200 of these towers surrounded West Berlin. The tower was staffed around the clock by two border guards. Today, the watchtower is the only one of its kind still standing, In 2001, it became a listed building. Appointments can be made for 3-4 persons to climb the tower.

The Museum in der Kulturbrauerei opened in mid-November 2013 with a permanent exhibition on “Everyday Life in the GDR”. Original objects, documents, film and sound records show the chasm between ideal and reality in East Germany. The Tränenpalast (“Palace of Tears”) is home to a permanent exhibition on “Border Experiences: Everyday Life in a Divided Germany”. Located at the former border crossing for West Germans travelling to and from East Berlin, the site includes personal stories, original documents and eyewitness interviews to tell the story of life in a city divided by a Wall. It also shows the important stages in the process of German unification. Admission is free.

The Mauerpark (Berlin Wall Park) is not far from Bernauer Straße and is a popular place to relax in densely populated Prenzlauer Berg. The remaining pieces of the hinterland wall are regularly decorated with new graffiti by graffiti artists.

Der Berlin TV Tower, at 368m, is the highest structure in Germany and one of the main sights in Germany's capital. It was built 45 years ago in Berlin's historic city centre near the Rotes Rathaus (Berlin City Hall) to mark the 20th anniversary of the GDR. It was designed to meet the East German government's need for a transmitter that could send a signal across the entire country. For Walter Ulbricht, the East German leader at the time, the tower was also a symbol of the superiority of the socialist society. Every year, more than a million visitors ascend to the top of the TV tower, home to its rotating restaurant, and enjoy seeing the hustle and bustle of the city from more than 200 metres above the city.

Various shops across the city, including one at Potsdamer Platz, Unter den Linden, Hackesche Höfe.
The Ampelmännchen, as Germans call the man on crosswalk signs, took on different designs in East and West Germany. The East German version even had his own identity thanks to a children's programme on East German television. When the East German Ampelmännchen was in danger of being replaced with the West German version in the rush to modernise after the fall of the Wall, initiatives were formed to preserve the popular character. The man with the hat has become the mascot for the GDR nostalgia.

"The Berlin Wall – A History in Pictures" is an online project by Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg (rbb) on the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 2014. 250 films tell the story of life in the divided city from 1961–1989. The mostly short videos come from the archives of SFB/rbb, the Deutsches Rundfunkarchiv (DRA–German Broadcasting Archives) and East German television.
